Buses are the most widely used transport while traveling within the city as well as to the suburbs. CSTC (Calcutta State Transport Corporation) Govt. buses, private and mini buses, specials, limited stops, express service etc are the various buses you will find while traveling in Kolkata. Fares vary according to the type of buses availed. All buses have some seats reserved for ladies and elderly people (senior citizens). In most of the cases, ticket collector (conductor) collects the ticket after boarding. Long distance buses both ordinary and luxurious are available from Esplanade and Howrah.

Trams in Kolkata have a romantic appeal. Though unsuitable for a metro bulging at its seams it runs in some part of the city. The electric trams are still one of the convenient means of traveling between places within the city. Though slow on the laid tracks, they are environment friendly.

Taxis are easily available through out the city. Prepaid taxis are available from the Airport and Howrah station. Taxi fares can be confusing since the taxis are equipped with different kinds of meters. Taxis with new electronic meters are better but it is always advisable for the passenger to ask for a rate conversion chart which displays the conversion list between metered amount and the payable amount.

Auto Rickshaws in Kolkata are three wheeled vehicles that run between short distances and are available through out the city. They have designated routes and being smaller in size move faster in the crowded city streets.

Rickshaws in Kolkata are bicycle paddled or man pulled rickshaws. The former are more to be seen than the latter since hand pulled rickshaws are banned. The three wheeled vehicles are mostly used for very short distance.

Ferry Boats in Kolkata are popular among daily commuters who cross the river. Easy and enjoyable it is a nice way to avoid the infamous traffic jam on Howrah Bridge.
